No, actually, we didn't need another pet.
What weakness overcomes us on those few days -- only a handful
over the course of a lifetime -- when we gladly take on a task
that will require 10 or 20 years of daily attention, not to mention
hundreds or thousands of dollars in veterinary bills and housesitter
fees? The humane society had set up shop in Incarnation's courtyard
after church, and Jen was busy serving coffee in the hall while
Emily fell in love with a little hobo dog who, after we knew
him for a day or two, would come to be called Billy.
