$250 Taxi Ride

M25
Heathrow to Gatwick
June 2, 2008

When we couldn't find details on the Heathrow display about our connecting flight to Venice, we asked the British Air clerks.

"Sorry, sir -- British Air doesn't even fly to Venice. Well, not from this airport anyway. These tickets are out of Gatwick."

How long does it take to get there?

They glanced at their watches. "It's 2 now. The flight's at 4. You can't make it."

But our taxi driver felt otherwise, and raced down the M25, the meter whirling madly. It had reached 117 Mighty British Pounds by the time we reached Gatwick a little before 3 p.m., and with some extras for the bags and tip, we were well over $250. But that was less than it would have cost us to miss our flight -- or so we told ourselves.
