Some years ago, my friend Nancy gave me a book,
A Unit of Water, A Unit of Time, about Joel White
and his Brooklin Boat Yard, and the beautiful wooden
boats they designed and built there.
During last year's lockdown, I picked it up again and
found myself more intrigued then I was 20 years ago.
Through it, I found my way to the WoodenBoat School,
and I signed up for a class, a year ahead of it, as
marker of something to look forward to after the pandemic.
The pandemic hasn't quite ended. But I went to Maine anyway.
And after class ended on Saturday, I walked down the highway
to Center Harbor to take in the boat yard and the beautiful
boats moored in the small harbor it sits on. It's pretty
different from Newport Beach, and I'll never look at that
busy playground of plastic boats the same way again.
