Christiana
Copenhagen

Hippies took over an abandoned army base in the early 1970s,
and they're still there. Christiana is like a free state within
Copenhagen, a remnant of the era of free love and purple
haze. Pot plants grow along the side of the paths, and the
citizens hang out listening to music and partying in the midday
sun. The ramshackle houses that the residents have built over
the past decades are certainly worth millions now, surrounded
by green space and overlooking water, just five minutes from
central Copenhagen. (Click on the image of Em on the swing
for a short movie
of a hippie-made playground toy.)
