I hope I don't forget

I hope I don't forget
how you marched straight up that hill
on that hot, spring day,
a half mile or so
to the place where the ground levels out.
Up there, I showed you where the bullfrogs live
and we laughed at their squeaks as they
splashed away from our prodding sticks.
Coming down,
I asked for your hand,
but you said no,
and wouldn't even slow down
till you slipped
and landed hard on your bottom.
That's when I picked you up
and hugged you.
While you cried,
two mountain bikers rolled past, smiling.
I hope I don't forget.
