Searching for a Canoe
Russian River

It might have been caught in the willows just a few yards downstream,
or maybe lying upside down on a gravelly beach. But somewhere that
Peter & Emma's canoe wasn't was where it was supposed to be: tied up
on their beach. Late spring rains swept it away, so we borrowed my folks
rowboat and motor and patrolled the river between their place and ours.
Our search proved fruitless. But to paraphrase the bumper sticker,
even the most fruitless motor boat ride is better than spending the
evening commuting or working. And we proved the heroes for
the fellow whose dock had risen and landed atop a pole, from where
he couldn't unhitch it until we happened along.
