Where Mermaids Once Brawled

How did the glass beads get here?, we asked Mano, the very large Hawaiian man who was a regular selling jewelry out of his van at the Glass Beach near Port Allen.
"This is where the mermaids used to come and drink!" he said. "And they would get in fights and throw the bottles at each other, shattering them all over the beach!"
We were on a volcanic speck in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, ready to believe.
Then: "Nah. This used to be a landfill a long time ago. Everything else has rusted or washed away."
