Our annual meeting at the W in Barcelona coincided
with Catalonia's (short-lived) declaration of independence
from Spain. John and I marched along with the celebrants
as we made our way to our department dinner on the last night.
Still, we didn't stay too close for too long, or allow ourselves
to get boxed into the plaza with the masses. These things occasionally
go south in a bad way. And we had a good dinner waiting.
The next morning, as I was waiting for my taxi to the airport,
I said to the bellman, "Well, I guess you're an independent country
now, eh?"
"Yes," he replied with a weary look. "For about a day, I think."
