Time Travel to a Tropical Pool
Hana Highway, Maui

One day we drove our respective rentals
east, out past Paia where the hippies live, and onto
the Hana Highway, to
a place the McCannells know
where you can take an easy hike up to waterfalls
and swimming pools.
The land out there shows its history in many
ways, from the volcanic rock, cleaved, exposing
ledges where rain water tumbles into cool pools,
to the canals and channels dug in the 19th century
by Chinese laborers, that brought water to the
sugar rifineries. We view it through our own lens,
as a neglected set from an Indiana Jones movie or
a secret passage to the backside of The Jungle Cruise.
