At this shrine to the Meiji emperor and empress,
visitors can offer 500 yen for a wooden placard,
on which they can write their hopes and wishes.
Hundreds hung beneath this tree, in Japanese,
English, German, and French -- including my
favorite, a birthday wish for an Indian or
Arabian horse.
