We rolled into New Orleans after dark in our black Dodge Charger,
having raced across Florida's Panhandle and bits of Alabama
and Mississippi to the twangy sound of Jerry Reed's "Eastbound and Down."
But we were the last to arrive, so they placed us in the last room available: the room in
the back of the shotgun shack behind the main antebellum manor house.
We dropped our bags and headed around the corner to Frenchmen Street, where we found the Marigny
alive with people and jazz on the street.
