Bored with running up and down I-5, I detoured off the
main road as I came down from the Tejon Pass and discovered
an artifact from California's industrial heritage: The
Petroleum Highway, where thousands of oil derricks are
still pumping away, drawing crude up from the depths of
rock and sand under the San Joaquin Valley.
