We took the water taxi from Shoreline Village, near the Queen Mary
back to Alamitos Bay. About halfway there, the boat slowed down and made
its way towards one of the oil-derrick islands. Bobbing in the water, clinging
to a swamped aluminum canoe, were two bewildered would-be fisherman,
their paddles and cushions floating away from them. What happened,
our skipper asked as we approached and began to fish them
out. They weren't really sure. How long had they been in the water? They
didn't know. We helped them aboard (our part, it turned out, was staying out
of the way) then handed them over to Harbor Patrol and continued on our way.
