Nature on Rockaway Beach
Bainbridge Island

Here we had traveled up to Alaska to see some wildlife,
but other than a couple of eagles in trees in Juneau
and a few whales' tails near Glacier Bay, we had seen
very little. Til we arrived on Rockaway Beach on Bainbridge
Island, where just a few yards from Hillary's dad's living
room window two bald eagles were feasting on the innards
of a baby seal on the beach. (Apparently, we decided, the
seal had misunderstood the details of the invitation to
come to dinner on the Fourth.)
