For about a month every summer, all the siblings and their spouses
in my mom's family are within the same decade -- well, two months
now that my dad has passed away. This summer, they were all in their
80s for a few months after Aunt Barbara turned 80 in July and before
my mom turned 90 in September.
About six months before this, Amanda got the idea that it would be
fun to celebrate this at the cabin. But by the time the summer
rolled around, at least two of the octogenarians wouldn't have been
able to make it across the path. My mom had a stroke in the spring,
and Aunt Judi had hurt her leg and not come to the US this summer.
So, we had it in a drive-up location instead: my mom's house out
in Monte Rio. Our family isn't one for family reunions, so we
didn't really have any rituals or traditions. But it was a nice
way to catch up and see people.
