Galloping up to the Volcano
Arenal

On most horseback rides we've been on, they lead you
carefully in a line -- mostly walking with the occasional
trot. So we were pretty thrilled when our guide on this ride
up to Arenal Volcano took off at a gallop, calling
for our horses to join his in a run. We raced over
meadows, and into the rain forests, then right up
to the safety line, beyond which it's unsafe to
go in the event of an unpredicted massive eruption (as happened
in 2000 and 1968). The whole ride was an insurance nightmare --
and lots of fun.
