Dog Beach
Long Beach

Long Beach stretches for about 6 miles, most of it
nearly deserted, even on a Sunday in summer. (The town
raised a seawall as a barrier against dangerous waves
sometime during the 20th century, before beachgoers
decided they liked waves. Now they all go elsewhere.)
Nearly deserted, that is, except for the hundred yards
or so of the Dog Beach, where dozens of labradors, German
shepherds, border collies, and doodles churn up the sand
and frolic in the waves, while their owners try to keep
the children from doing too much digging in this particular
sand.
