As the specter of long days in the Eurovan crossing Nevada and Utah deserts loomed closer, our summer trip to Yellowstone was clipped to a foray into Idaho. With only weeks to go, it was trimmed to an expedition to Lassen. And as a lazy 4th of July weekend drifted into Tuesday, with little energy and little packed, it became a drive through Mendocino County -- which turned out to be just right. We did the whole trip, four days of camping, on a half tank of gas -- "slightly un-American," one colleague told me when we got back.
