Queen Mary Chill
Long Beach

At first, it was hard to get in the mood for wintry Christmas
when it's close to 90 degrees outside. But stepping into the rooms where
the ice sculptures told Dickens' Christmas Carol, we found the
spirit of cold.
Someone said that Chinese ice sculptors did the carving work here.
It was really quite impressive, the pictures don't do it justice.
And something about it being so bitterly cold made it all the more
dramatic, since it felt like we were in danger.
Later, clambering around on deck, trying to feel the romance of those
Atlantic crossings, and thinking about the fact that the Queen Mary has
now spent more years sitting in concrete at a Long Beach pier than it
spent crossing the ocean.
